The Fleet Behind a WorldTour Team

Cars, buses, trucks and vans: the hidden logistics keeping professional cycling on the road
1. More than a cycling team
Eight riders line up for a Grand Tour, but getting those eight riders to the start requires far more than eight bikes and a couple of team cars. Behind every WorldTour squad sits a surprisingly large fleet of cars, vans, buses and trucks transporting riders, staff, bicycles, food, clothing, spare parts and increasingly sophisticated performance equipment across Europe. Team Visma | Lease a Bike provided one of the clearest snapshots before the 2022 Tour de France: its operation included one team bus, one cooking truck, one refrigerated truck, one equipment truck, five team cars and six vans — 15 vehicles supporting just eight riders. Alongside them travelled dozens of staff, 45 bikes and 75 wheels. And that was the infrastructure for one race, not the entire organisation. With men's, women's and development programmes potentially competing simultaneously, the total fleet required by a major cycling organisation can run into several dozen vehicles. A modern WorldTour team increasingly resembles a small travelling logistics company, rebuilding part of its headquarters in a different location almost every day.
2. From team cars to mobile workshops
The team car remains the most visible part of this convoy, but it is only the beginning. Race cars carry sports directors, mechanics, spare bikes, wheels, clothing, nutrition and radio equipment, while additional cars and minibuses move staff between hotels, starts and finishes. Vans transport everything that does not fit elsewhere, and trucks have evolved into mobile workshops, warehouses and kitchens. Visma illustrates just how specialised this infrastructure has become. Ahead of the 2024 Tour, its equipment truck carried around 40 bicycles and operated as a workshop on wheels, while another truck transported time-trial equipment when required. Three Volkswagen Crafters carried additional equipment, including the roughly 5,500 bottles required for the Tour. Other vehicles handled refrigerated food and regular fresh-supply runs. Perhaps most strikingly, another van transported riders' personal mattresses, pillows, curtains and cooling equipment from hotel to hotel. Visma has even added a Control Room, turning another vehicle into a mobile data-analysis centre. What looks from outside like a convoy is increasingly a travelling performance infrastructure.
3. The €500,000 mobile clubhouse
No vehicle illustrates that transformation better than the team bus. What was once primarily transportation has become a mobile clubhouse, changing room, recovery area, meeting room and office. A modern cycling bus can contain individual rider seats, showers, toilets, kitchen facilities, refrigerators, washing equipment, extensive storage, connectivity and powerful climate-control systems. All of this comes at a price. A fully equipped modern WorldTour bus can represent around €500,000–€600,000, while historical examples show just how much of the value lies in the conversion rather than the underlying coach. RadioShack estimated more than a decade ago that a roughly €200,000 standard coach could require another €150,000–€200,000 of cycling-specific conversion.
Alpecin-Premier Tech offers a particularly revealing current example. Its wider structure reportedly operates four buses, and Philip Roodhooft has explained that the latest conversion took around five months. By managing much of the work internally, the organisation estimates that it substantially reduced the cost compared with buying a fully converted vehicle. At today's replacement values, four equivalent new buses alone could represent €2 million or more of mobile infrastructure. That does not mean Alpecin actually spent €2 million — the buses can be of different ages, bought used or converted more cheaply — but it gives an indication of the asset value hidden behind a major team.
4. Who actually pays for the fleet?
Replacement value, however, is very different from what a cycling team actually pays. Professional cycling uses a mixture of ownership, sponsorship, leasing, rental and outsourced services, and cars provide the clearest example. Alpecin-Premier Tech's latest agreement with Škoda Belgium covers 35 vehicles across its men's, women's and development structures: 22 Superb Combi, eight Octavia Combi and five Kamiq, with 16 equipped for race-radio communications and 20 fitted with bike racks. Earlier versions of the partnership involved rental specialist LuxAuto in the provision of the vehicles. The economic value of an automotive sponsor therefore extends well beyond a logo on a jersey or a cash sponsorship fee: every supplied car is an asset the team does not necessarily have to buy, finance and remarket itself.
Buses can follow a completely different model. Bahrain Victorious, for example, rented a fully equipped team bus for eight months in 2023 from French specialist Podiocom, using it at races including the Tour de France and Vuelta. Supplementary vans and other support vehicles can also be rented when the racing calendar creates temporary peaks in demand. A team can therefore simultaneously operate sponsor-supplied cars, buses it owns, specialist vehicles it leases and temporary rental vehicles. This also helps explain some unusual registration plates in the WorldTour paddock: the country on the plate may sometimes tell us more about the vehicle's owner or rental company than about the cycling team using it. Most importantly, it means that fleet value and fleet cost are not the same thing. A major organisation can have access to several million euros' worth of vehicles without having invested that amount itself.
5. 35,000 kilometres — and counting
These vehicles are not static sponsor displays. They are heavily used working tools. One historical benchmark from Quick-Step's service course put the annual mileage of a team car at around 35,000 km, an equipment truck at approximately 40,000 km and a team bus at roughly 60,000 km per year. The Tour de France gives another indication of the intensity involved: Škoda reported that approximately 300 vehicles surrounding the 2016 Tour collectively covered around 2.8 million kilometres in three weeks.
High utilisation changes the economics of the fleet. Fuel or electricity, tyres, insurance, tolls, maintenance, repairs, drivers and vehicle repositioning all become significant operating costs, while reliability itself becomes a performance issue. A bus breakdown can deprive riders of their changing room, showers, nutrition facilities and recovery environment at precisely the moment they need them. Regular fleet renewal is therefore important. There is no standard WorldTour replacement cycle, but automotive partnerships running over two or three seasons fit naturally with cars accumulating tens of thousands of kilometres each year. Fleet management becomes another professional function inside the team: acquisition, utilisation, maintenance, downtime, replacement and resale all have to be managed.
6. The hidden geography of the WorldTour
The vehicles also reveal something unexpected about the geography of professional cycling. The nationality printed next to a team name by the UCI does not necessarily tell us where that organisation actually operates. Teams maintain service courses — logistics centres where bikes, equipment and vehicles are stored, serviced and dispatched — and these can be hundreds or thousands of kilometres from the team's nominal home country. Historically, Flanders became an important hub because of its central position within the European racing calendar, excellent motorway connections and deep pool of cycling-specific expertise. This explains why foreign organisations such as Sky and Trek established major logistics operations in Belgium.
The pattern continues elsewhere. INEOS has maintained its European logistics operation in Belgium, UAE Team Emirates-XRG has strong operational roots in northern Italy, EF Education-EasyPost uses Girona in Spain, while Visma's logistics naturally remain centred in the Netherlands. This helps explain why an American, Australian, Emirati or British team can operate buses carrying Spanish, Italian or Belgian plates. Sometimes registration follows the service course; in other cases it can follow the vehicle owner or leasing company. A team's jersey tells us its sporting nationality. Its vehicles often reveal its real operational geography.
7. When logistics becomes performance
Perhaps the most interesting conclusion is that fleet size reflects cycling's economic hierarchy. A small Continental team can service many races with little more than two team cars, a camper or minibus and an additional van. A competitive ProTeam begins to require a proper bus, additional cars, vans and equipment transport. At WorldTour level — and especially for Grand Tour contenders — the vehicles themselves become part of the performance system. Visma's documented 15-vehicle Tour operation is a striking benchmark, while a historical look inside Trek's Belgian service course revealed 12 team cars, two Sprinter vans, two minivans, two trucks and two buses — 20 vehicles supporting the organisation. The largest modern structures go further still because men's, women's and development teams can all race at the same time.
This is ultimately what the fleet tells us about the evolution of professional cycling. Marginal gains are no longer limited to lighter bikes, aerodynamic clothing or nutrition. They extend to where riders sleep, what they eat, how their equipment is transported, how data is analysed and how consistently a team can reproduce the same controlled environment hundreds of kilometres away the following morning. Cars can be supplied by sponsors, buses can cost more than half a million euros, specialist vehicles can be rented, and an eight-rider Tour squad can require 15 vehicles just to keep moving. The bikes may still win the race, but behind them travels an invisible network making that performance possible.
A modern WorldTour team is not simply a group of cyclists. It is a mobile performance centre, workshop, restaurant, warehouse and logistics company — all travelling towards tomorrow's start.
